Grand Knights Charity

Each year the Grand Knight is given the honor of choosing a charity which he feels is worthy of requesting donations from the members of Notre Dame Council 2901. My charity for this year will be the Veterans Hospital on Loch Raven Blvd. Their official title is the "Baltimore Rehabilitation and Extended Care Center" which is part of the Department of Veterans Affairs-Maryland Health Care System.

The returning veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan are in need of several items. One is simply a television set which they can utilize from the comfort of their bed while they are recuperating. Many times they are not able to move around and there are only a few things which they can do to pass the time. Currently some of the units share one TV and there exists a need to place one per bed so each veteran can watch what they want and to have it mounted on a swing arm close to the bed for easier viewing. It is hoped that through donations all of the existing sets may be upgraded for this capability. There are no tax dollars being used for this project. The projected cost for the entire project is about $60,000. The other area that funds are needed is in the Social Work Account which now is very low in available money. This fund provides assistance to indigent and homeless veterans at the Baltimore VA Medical Center for emergencies such as clothing, cab fare to the hospital, etc.

These returning injured veterans have put their life on the line to ensure freedom for all American's. No matter what anyone feels concerning the issue of our government's sending our men and women to war, these veterans deserve our support. They are our real everyday hero's and we cannot turn our back on them in their time of need. They were there for us, now we have to be there for them. Please be as generous as you can. Your donation will go to them directly, there is no overhead or administrative costs involved. I can think of no better way to say "thanks".

Thank you in advance for your continued generosity. "Charity is the first principle of our order".
